Intermediate Premiere Alpha Keying Titles In Adobe Photoshop or In Paintshop-Pro File-New 720x576 or whatever your video editing screen size is. Resolution 72.000 pixels/inch Set up a gradient for fill and outline colour if desired. Make the text as vectors - no anti-alias (this avoids unwanted light pixels at the edges if adding a drop shadow etc.) Merge all layers (flatten) Select all and invert, ctrl click any areas that need to be added (even though it now gives a minus sign) apply any effect - drop shadow etc. Rectangle select just outside the area that includes all of the title and shadow. Apply effect perspective if required. Magic wand select the background and add any unselected interiors of closed areas - O, e, p, g, q, r, d, b, a, and bits trapped between letters, Selections-save to alpha channel, save finished doc as .psd - Photoshop format to preserve the alpha channel for use in Premiere.Load the .psd file up in Premiere and place it on Video 2 on the timeline. Right click it and select Video Options - Transparency
and then in the Transparency Settings pop up, under Key Type, select the fifth one - Alpha Channel.
Once you get the hang of it, this keys out titles very cleanly and with less effort than fiddling with every key type in the
Transparency Settings dialogue within Premiere for a normal Jpeg or Bitmap.
When using a Photoshop file with alpha transparency it works fine until you add motion, then it is no longer
transparent. To get both to work - under motion check: ALPHA CHANNEL | USE CLIPS' instead of ALPHA CHANNEL | CREATE NEW
Alpha Glowing Titles
In PSP5 create your text on an empty layer. While the text is still selected choose "Save to Alpha Channel
". This attaches an alpha channel to the image. Save the image as a Targa file (TGA) which is less than half
the size of a Photoshop (.psd) file and load into Premiere on the video 2 track.
Choose transparency and select ALPHA CHANNEL. In the filters menu select Alpha Glow. In the effect controls
window click setup and tick end colour then choose a start and end colour. Play with the glow and brightness
settings unitl you're happy with the preview. Try expanding the track view and adjusting the (grey) display keyframes and (red) display opacity rubber bands.
Hold down alt and drag for a preview. The final result will probably need to be rendered. It does on my Rex RT!
