System stability

Software setup is best kept to a minimum, with as few background processes running as possible, while editing. Reliability and speed are key factors for hassle free editing.
Adequate fast Hard Disk storage space.7200 rpm UDMA drives are adequate and very cheap now.

Hardware

A fast system gives you more responsive editing. Buy or build the best you can afford. Check out our latest system here Realtime increases throughput and makes the whole experience more enjoyable/less frustrating. Some trade-off between what you can afford and your patience (how much time you have available to wait while things render) means that some effects that are highly desirable, possibly processor-intensive, but are are rarely used, may be reserved for special projects.

RAM has become much cheaper over the years, the more you can install, the easier everything becomes.
Large 7200 rpm UDMA Hard drives are now cheap, fast and reliable enough for editing.
SCSI drives are more expensive and in my experience unnecessary.

Keep Up To Date - visit the sites on our links page often (and look out for other up-to-date ones with the best search engine (currently Google, but learn as much as you can about the advanced searches for the very best results) Search for information on any terms and procedures that you don’t understand.

Organising the Premiere Environment

Premiere screenshot A-B editing workspace single monitor

With so many menu's and modules within Premiere, the screen can become clutterred and confusing. Four of the main ones are minimised in the picture above but can still be accessed when required.

Settle on your preferred environment and save it as a workspace (Window - Workspace - Save Workspace)

If your workspace feels too cluttered, install a dual monitor graphics card (Matrox are current leaders in this field) and add a second monitor. The first time you drag a window from one monitor to another and work in windows that span two screens you'll be hooked!

twin monitors workspace screenshot This screenshot of a twin monitor workspace (2048 x 768) has been reduced to fit here but the lack of clutter and vastly improved ease of working, with favourite tools instantly available, should be obvious.

An art pad (Wacom Graphire etc) also helps to make the process more intuitive and speedy. Using a pen may seem a little odd at first but soon the process becomes more natural than using a mouse.

Evaluate the many plugins available but be choosy about which you retain. Too many slows down loading Premiere and clutters the workspace.

My view is that the titler is the weakest part of Premiere and long overdue for a rehashing. It's very basic and clunky. I was producing far slicker titles using Broadcast Titler on a genlocked Amiga ten years ago. I've also found that it is the one part of the application most likely to cause a crash on my current system (twin PIII 1000mhz, 512MB, 100GIG, Windows 2000 and Canopus DVRex RT). That said, you can get acceptable results, provided you go about it the correct way.

Maintaining the Edit System

Archive critical material regularly to CD, DVD or another hard disk
Defrag your hard disks regularly
Set the swap file to use your best performance hard drive.
Use system maintenance tools such as Norton Utilities, Windoctor and Disk Doctor regularly but turn off antivirus software whenever editing and remember to turn it on again if using the Internet or installing new software
Delete the waste-bin contents regularly
Loading every free piece of software from magazine cover disks is tempting but can be disastrous. One poor install or uninstall can leave your editing system crippled. Try to evaluate programs on a different (family?) machine and always have a current backup of your critical system files. A CD or DVD burner and Norton Ghost can be a lifesaver! Don’t rely too much on “Go Back” as it doesn’t always work!

Tips To Improve Your Productivity in Premiere

Learning the keyboard shortcuts really helps to speed things along in any program. You could go to the trouble of buying a keyboard that has the keys colour co-ordinated and marked up for specifically Premiere but it's really easy to just learn a few new ones each time you use the program. Some of my most frequently used Premiere ones are:-

With the timeline active
+ zooms in (no need for shift)
- zooms out (no need for shift)
\ Displays the entire project in the timeline.
c Razor tool
v Selection Tool (arrow)
enter builds previews and plays
spacebar play
F1 Help
F2 Quit Premiere
F3 Import file
F4 Import Directory
F5 Movie Capture
F9 New Title Window

Most of the premiere keyboard shortcuts are listed here (Opens in a separate window)
