The Brief.

Your first step should be putting together a brief. This may be just a few pages, but it should identify the following:- the message(s) you want to communicate, the target audience profile (the entire production should be pitched at them), the locations to be used, any time, financial or other constraints.

Think of the style of programmes you have seen that could be used as a "model". List any ideas that may be modified to suit your production. Do you need any props, personnel, archive footage, a presenter? Would this be someone you provide or an actor?

A storyboard can be of great help to you at this stage. You can download one here. Use a comic-strip, box style to show how you think that the video should progress. Limited artistic ability presents no problem as "Match-stick" men and simple shapes can be used to represent ideas. Add notes to clarify the sort of dialogue needed to accompany the images. The storyboard will also help the video producer to understand exactly what you require. The nature of the visual images and the content of the voice-over, if any, should be specifically aimed.

If sound on location is required, this must be specified.

If any of this appears too complex, discuss it with us and we can take most of this work on ourselves.

ActionVideo will now draw up an estimated cost and a 'treatment' which is an outline of how we intend to visualise your brief. It will indicate a breakdown of the provisional budget, an outline any areas where additional expenditure may be required or savings could be made and will not hide any other charges. This will be completed at no extra charge. We will be able to assess what your money will buy and the type of presentation you can expect to receive for your money. Think about specific shots that you want. Decide on camera angles that show the action that you need to see.

Researching. The producer & script writer will need to immerse themselves in the subject, and they will need access to all relevant information. We will meet any colleagues from the company who should have their own input for detailed discussions. Visits to important locations and facilities will be organised. Thorough research and finding out what information is required will prevent costly errors later on. This research will be a two way process, with ActionVideo working at developing a knowledge of the subject.
